Walled City

The Walled City of Lahore, also known as the “Old City,” or “Anderoon Shehr” (Punjabi: اندرون شہر), is the section of Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan, that was fortified by a city wall during the Mughal era.

The Walled City of Lahore covers an area of 256 ha with a population of 200,000. The city walls were destroyed shortly after the British annexed the Punjab in 1849 and were replaced with gardens, some of which exist today. The Circular Road links the old city to the urban network. Access to the Walled City is still gained through the 13 ancient gates, or their emplacements.

The convoluted and picturesque streets of the inner city remain almost intact, but the rapid demolition and frequently illegal rebuilding taking place throughout the city is causing the historic fabric to be eroded and replaced by inferior constructions. Historic buildings are no exception, and some have been encroached upon. The few old houses in the city are usually two or three stories tall, with brick façades, flat roofs, richly carved wooden balconies and overhanging windows.

Another name of another city. Lahore. In another time, in another place. Lahore. In another sky, with another ground. Lahore. In another memory, in another Love. Lahore. It not just another city, nor is it just another name. They say that if you have not seen Lahore, you have not even lived. Jinne Lahore vekhya nai, te O jamya-e ni. Lahore is a place where you fall in love with the disarray of life. Lahore is a place where you fall in love with the dirt, the pollution, the smog, the noise. Even at its worse, Lahore is beautiful. It is not just another city. Lahore is the place you crave to see, and once you fall into its embrace you can never let go. Once you touch that soil, once you breathe that air, no other soil, none of the air you ever breathe again will ever be the same. Lahore is the place where lovers meet in the dark of the night, across the courtyards of the Badshaahi Masjid, around the gates of Old Lahore. Lahore is the place where memories come alive. Where you close your eyes and you see another era, another childhood, aik aur hi daastan…that may not even be yours. Yet, you cannot help but fall in love with them. You cannot help but fall in love with Lahore. The mere name of the city sends shivers down your spine. Those same shivers manifest into this unquenchable thirst and ache to run into the city’s arms, because once you have found that solace in Lahore, you die to go back. That’s what Lahore is. That’s what love is.

Many trucks and buses in Pakistan are highly customized and decorated by their owners. These adorned vehicles are considered as moving art, or jingle art. Because of their unique decor style, these vehicles are quite distinct in layout from other trucks around the world. Each part of the vehicle is decorated differently, with variations depending on the regional style. Although the decorative process is usually very expensive, it is still practiced throughout Pakistan with great zeal and aesthetic zest.

A truck driver/owner usually pays $3,000 to $5,000 for their vehicle’s external decoration. This decoration includes structural changes, paintings, calligraphy, ornamental decor and more. Mirror work on the front and back of vehicles and wooden carvings on the truck doors are commonly used. Usually, the driver or the owner takes the truck to a coach workshop soon after its purchase for this decoration. The artist embellishes each truck according to the particular tastes of the driver. The sides of the truck depict different scenes through their adorned artwork and may include metal “decoration pieces” which draw additional attention to the vehicle. The exterior of the trucks are often adorned with poetry.

The Women of Pakistan

Photographers Kaye Martindale and Geoff Brokate traveled through Pakistan for around eight months making portraits of local women, including young blogger Malala Yousafzai, a runner-up for Time’s Person of the Year 2012 award.

The couple’s aim was to meet everyday women in Pakistan and understand their lives, Martindale said. They traveled across the country and met approximately 150 women, interviewing more than 100 of them.

It is synonymous to holidays,summer resorts,green hills,pine trees.
It is a place that has something to offer to every age group in any season be it the green fresh summers or snow covered winters, captivating mountain views,sunsets or the roaming clouds.One can never get tired of going to Murree and enjoy its beauty.
